As part of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth’s commitment to care for all creation, Sisters across the Congregation find practical ways to nurture the environment in their local communities. Sister Vimala Karakattu shares how a simple gardening project at Nazareth Convent in Mokama, India, is providing fresh food while caring for Mother Earth.
Caring for and Nurturing Mother Earth
Our nature is blessed with a variety of seasons. The winter season has bid us goodbye, and the beautiful spring season has arrived, bringing colorful flowers to all the flower pots at Nazareth Convent, Mokama campus.
Summer has now set in, though a bit late. All the flower seeds have been carefully collected and stored for the next year. The flower beds were given a month of rest!
I began to wonder what else could fill the flower beds during the scorching heat of North India. The best innovative idea was to plant Amaranthus Red in all the empty beds. It is growing well, in all its regalia—a truly beautiful sight to behold!
Mother Earth is blessing us with organic leafy vegetables, helping to reduce our grocery expenses. It provides us with fresh nutrients that enhance the quality of our diet. It also empowers the household to live healthier lives while honoring our Mother Earth.
We use only organic manure and fresh water for the garden. Let us continue to develop such good habits of caring for the environment and uphold the richness of our Mother Earth.
