What exactly is a Discernment of Spirits Retreat?

It is a silent retreat to help you catch your spiritual breath and draw on the wisdom of Saints Ignatius, Francis and Benedict. Its purpose is to help you learn to hear how God speaks to you, and how to make wise and holy decisions. Nuns and Sisters are available for questions during the day.

Begins with 8:00 a.m. Mass (optional) in the Nun’s chapel or 9:00 a.m. with opening session.  The day closes at 4:30 PM. However, the Nuns invite you for 4:45 PM Evening prayer if you are able to stay.

Where is the retreat being held?

The Discernment of Spirits Retreat takes place at the 2025 dedicated Valley of our Lady Cistercian Monastery, 7320 Urness Road, Hollandale, Wisconsin, Breathe in the peace and experience the serenity of this outside of Madison location.

What do others say about past Franciscan-Cistercian Discernment Retreats?

Our discussions throughout the day, along with the booklets, made it easy to apply these topics to our own lives. I loved having lots of time to take a step back and reflect on these things. -Rachel

I have been a Catholic all whole life but so much of this was new to me. Being able to talk with the Nuns and Sisters about some issues. Learning how to seek confirmation and the ways to receive it. -Natasha

I loved that it was silent and there was back and forth between talks and prayer. I loved that there was lots of guidance for how to spend silent time in prayer. – Melanie

I was never taught anything about discerning especially that the good spirits may be loud too.-Thought only evil spirits were. Booklets and prayers also wonderful. -Morgan, Monona, WI

The silence! Talking to the Sisters. -Anna

I really enjoyed the structure of learning sessions followed by quiet times of prayer. I especially liked the materials, examples and conversations shared in presenting the sessions. -Rebecca, Sauk City, WI
