On June 16, 2025 Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, a religious Congregation of pontifical right dedicated to the apostolate, convoke our thirty-fourth General Chapter. The General Chapter convenes every six years.

The primary purpose of the General Chapter is:

  1. To protect the intention of the foundresses concerning the nature, purpose, spirit, and character of the Congregation ratified by the Holy See, as well as wholesome traditions of the Congregation, all of which constitutes our patrimony.
  2. To promote suitable renewal in accord with this patrimony.
  3. To elect the Community Director and her Council.
  4. To treat major business matters;
  5. To publish norms which all are bound to obey.

The Community of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity began in 1869 in a small village of Clarks Mills, WI. Theresa Gramlich and four young women responded to God’s call, discerning they should share their daily lives together in religious community.

St. Francis of Assisi’s “Gospel Way of Life” inspired them. Their love for the Catholic Church and selfless dedication to the service of others guided them and the Community began to grow. Since then, we Franciscan Sisters have led an active and prayerful community life, responding to the needs in Catholic Dioceses and parishes in the United States and where the Holy Spirit leads. Our Community serves in the fields of education, healthcare, pastoral ministry, campus ministry, ministry to the homebound/nursing homes and Sister Presence in our hospitals and nursing facilities.

Today, we whole-heartedly live our vocation in the loving community spirit of our foundresses. Our charism: we strive to live the Gospel in simplicity, built on faith in a loving God, joyful acceptance of poverty, love for the Church, and selfless dedication to the service of others. The world needs you. God calls you. We invite you.
