As part of the Sisters of Charity, BVM year-long Immigration Reform Initiative, BVM sisters, associates, and friends are hosting a prayer service to stand in solidary as we affirm our Catholic tradition that holds sacred the dignity of each person, and also recognize our immigrant history in a nation established by the rich contributions of generations of immigrants and migrants.
The prayer service will be held in Mary Frances Clarke Chapel and will be available to view on livestream. The service will acknowledge the positive community response received by the sisters after the 2008 Postville Immigration Raid, during which 389 undocumented workers were arrested at Agriprocessors, an agricultural facility.
In response to these tumultuous times and with a desire to bring hope to our world and local community, we are guided by our BVM Congregational Immigration Stance:
“Conscious of the present suffering and injustices experienced by our immigrants and with an awareness that our current United States immigration policy is morally unacceptable, we proclaim and affirm our commitment to comprehensive immigration reform.”
The BVM community is committed to this initiative to raise immigration awareness and advocacy guided by this stance. The prayer service also responds to a call by the LCWR for “100 Days of Prayer, Fasting, and Advocacy.” Participating congregations, including BVMs, are dedicating a day to pray and act for peace and justice.
