Vincentian Home in Pittsburgh and Nazareth Home in Louisville appear together on the America’s Best Nursing Homes 2026 list. Though they serve different regions, the roots of both places reach into the same Catholic tradition shaped by Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac. Each home was founded by women religious who built ministries for older adults long before national rankings existed.
1,000 nursing homes ‘best’ at both short- and long-term care: US News
Nazareth Home in Louisville opened in 1976 as a ministry of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. The Sisters began their Community in 1812 near Bardstown under Catherine Spalding and Bishop John Baptist Mary David. From the early years they cared for children, the sick and older adults. Nazareth Home continued that pattern in a new setting, offering long-term care, short-term recovery, and support for Louisville families. Its sister campus, Nazareth Home Clifton, stands in the same tradition.
Vincentian Home in Pittsburgh traces its start to 1924. The Vincentian Sisters of Charity, organized in 1902 to serve Slovak immigrants and the sick, opened a small cottage for adults who needed nursing care. They expanded the work through the decades into a larger campus that became a steady presence in the region. In 2008, the Vincentian Sisters of Charity joined the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. The legacy of the Pittsburgh Sisters remains visible in the Home’s continued service to older adults across western Pennsylvania.
