A Decade of Hope: Kolbe Home Turns 10Blanche Correia, SCN

Kolbe Home marked its 10th anniversary on Aug. 14, 2025, the feast of St. Maximilian Kolbe, patron of prisoners. Established by the Prison Ministry of India, Kolbe Home serves children of prisoners and offers care, stability, and belonging.

As a Prison Ministry of India volunteer, I was invited by Father Francis Kodiyan, national coordinator of PMI, to attend the celebration. Sister Teresa Rebello of the Holy Spirit Congregation joined me for the visit. We were welcomed by the children and staff and joined a community already gathered in joy.

Eucharist at the Center

The Eucharist began at 10:15 a.m. Most Rev. Joseph Susainathan, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Bangalore, served as the main celebrant. His presence affirmed the importance of this ministry.

Children from Kolbe Home and Premodaya, residents of Jeevodaya, benefactors, volunteers, and religious from nearby communities took part. The liturgy reflected shared gratitude and collective effort.

Children, staff, the PMI national office team, the co-founder, and the national coordinator worked together to prepare for the day. The celebration reflected a community effort rooted in the Gospel.

Celebrating Life and Talent

Following the Eucharist, children from Kolbe Home and Premodaya presented a cultural program. Songs and dances filled the space, including performances by children from Manipur. Their energy reflected confidence and joy shaped by care and support.

Milestones of Inspiration

Two books were released during the celebration. The second edition of Sister Adele’s book, My Journey With Brethren Behind Bars, offers insight into the lives of prisoners and the power of mercy.

Another book, Van Thuan: Home Where Broken Lives Begin Again, by Sister Santan Nago FS, was also launched. The book reflects on leadership, compassion, and renewal within prison ministry.

The day also included the blessing of a new recording studio at the PMI National Office, expanding outreach and communication efforts.

A Home Shaped by the Gospel

Over the past decade, Kolbe Home has grown into more than a shelter. It is a place where children are supported through education, structure, and community life.

Each child carries a personal story shaped by loss and disruption. Their confidence reflects the daily commitment of staff, volunteers, benefactors, and PMI leadership who walk with them.

A Shared Mission

The anniversary highlighted PMI’s mission to serve children of prisoners with care and dignity. The celebration honored co-founders, coordinators, volunteers, benefactors, and the children themselves who shape Kolbe Home each day.

Looking Ahead

As Kolbe Home enters its second decade, the celebration offered a moment to reflect on what is possible when community and care guide action. The past 10 years show that when the Gospel is lived through daily service, lives can grow and heal.
