SCNs Barbara Flores, Carlette Gentle and Maggie Cooper recently sat down with the Catholic Diocese of Belize City and Belmopan for a live broadcast to discuss the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth’s 50-year history in Belize.

The Sisters spoke of their history, beginning with their arrival in 1975 at the invitation of the Jesuits, who sought help in pastoral ministry in Dangriga. From the outset, the Sisters emphasized collaboration with local communities, encouraging lay leadership, promoting prayer in native languages, and integrating cultural traditions into worship. These efforts resonated with the vision of the Second Vatican Council.

“The language of Love and Faith, that’s universal, said Sister Barbara.

Now Provincial of the SCNs’ Western Province, Sister Barbara touted the Congregation’s global presence and commitment to service, citing 121 ministries across the Congregation in six countries. Sister Maggie Cooper reflected on her 18 years of ministry in Belize, highlighting programs that nurtured lay leaders, strengthened families, and engaged youth through initiatives such as “Search” weekends.

“It’s like a homecoming for me. It’s a big joy to be here,” Sister Maggie said of returning to Belize for the Celebration.

Sister Carlette Gentle shared her ongoing work with the elderly in Belize City through LIFE (Living Independently in Full Existence), a program that serves over 100 seniors with social support, health access, and community care.

As part of the Jubilee celebration, the Sisters are hosting a special Mass at Sacred Heart in Dangriga on August 31. The liturgy will be intercultural, uniting Garifuna, Maya, Creole, and Spanish traditions in thanksgiving for five decades of shared faith and service. The Mass will be streamed live on the Catholic Diocese of Belize Facebook page at 1 p.m. EST.
