“I Give Thanks to My God Every Time I Remember You”

This has always been one of my favorite lines from Philippians. I associate it with Thanksgiving, one of my favorite holidays. Next week, as we gather around the table, I am sure we will give thanks in a very special way. I am thankful that the ten days we spent in Las Flores, Belize, in conjunction with San Miguel Arcangel Missions, were especially memorable for all of us.

We had the pleasure of meeting Rosa Vargas, a warmhearted woman in her mid-60s who lived in a small shack surrounded by a lively scene of chickens scratching for corn. Despite the poverty in her surroundings, vibrant flowers bloomed all around her, adding splashes of color to her modest existence. Rosa’s smile was magnetic, radiating joy that transcended her circumstances.

Recognizing her need for a more stable home, generous donations were collected to help construct a small yet sturdy house for Rosa and her grandson, Brandon. The new home, measuring just 18 feet by 20 feet, is modest in size, but it promises to be filled with warmth, love, and laughter. Rosa dreamed of a place where she and Brandon could create lasting memories, a sanctuary to nurture their bond and bring comfort amidst the challenges they face.

Our days were filled not only with the hard work of construction but also with the enriching experience of connecting with Rosa and the welcoming local community. We enjoyed a variety of delicious foods, each meal offering a unique taste of Salvadoran culture. As we immersed ourselves in this vibrant environment, we made it a point to pray together every morning and evening, seeking God’s blessings upon our efforts and the time we spent there. Each prayer became an opportunity to reflect on our purpose and the bonds we were forming with those around us. This combination of labor, fellowship, and spirituality truly enhanced our experience, creating lasting memories and connections.

Rosa couldn’t contain her joy as she stood in her new home, a modest sanctuary with three cozy rooms, a comfortable bed, and a simple table surrounded by chairs. Each corner of the house felt like a dream come true. During the house blessing ceremony, her emotions overflowed. Tears of gratitude filled her eyes as she expressed her thanks to everyone who supported her journey. She presented each volunteer with a lovingly embroidered pillowcase, a thoughtful token of her appreciation. Rosa’s gestures reflected her generous spirit and deep gratitude for the kindness that had transformed her life. Every detail in her new home echoed her hope and thankfulness, filling the air with warmth and happiness.

As we gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, let us pause and reflect on those less fortunate than ourselves. Often, they embody values such as patience, faith, respect, and love, qualities money cannot buy. Their resilience and experiences can teach us valuable lessons in gratitude and humility.

Let us also remember to lift them in prayer, asking for God’s grace to shine upon those facing challenges and hardships, guiding them toward brighter days. May we be graced with abundance in our hearts and minds, allowing us to appreciate the blessings we have and to share them generously with others. Together, let us embrace the spirit of Thanksgiving with hope, compassion, and love for all.
