On July 4, 1874, eight SNDs arrived in New York, headed for Cleveland, Ohio. The story is told that when the sisters sailed into New York's harbor and saw the fireworks, they thought that the fireworks were to welcome them! Within a few years several hundred SNDs came to the United States to teach immigrant children in Ohio and Kentucky.
